Senseless In Seattle

modern-vessels asked: I named my tortoise Comrade Oskar! My boyfriend and I just call him Oskar though. I've kind of been having a problem feeding him though, he doesn't really want to eat the vegetables I give him and I get worried that he's not eating anything and give him tiny pieces of fruit, which I know you're only supposed to do occasionally, but I don't know what else to do!

First off, love the name. {: How long have you had your tortoise, what kind is it, and what kind of vegetables have you been offering him? The book I have on torts suggests that fruit make up only 10% of their diet. The reason for this is because in bulk, tortoises’ bodies can have a hard time processing fruit. In addition, their feces may become really runny. (Fruit naturally contains a lot of water, and since most torts are native to a desert climate, they only need to intake so much.) They’ll also start to crave it and may refuse to eat anything else, like the way a child gets when offered too much junk food.
